Why do we need a prompt structure?
AI models process text sequentially. Vague or overly general queries lead to generic, irrelevant responses. A structured prompt acts like a roadmap: it specifies the AI's goal, limitations, and desired format. This significantly reduces the number of iterations and helps you get the results you want right away, making your work more efficient and saving time on reformulation or adjustments.
Step 1: Define Purpose and Role
Start with a clear statement of the problem: what exactly do you want to achieve? Then assign the AI a specific role if appropriate. For example, “You are a marketer...”, “You are a finance expert...”. This helps the model fit into the context and generate responses that are appropriate to the chosen perspective. A clear role narrows the search for information and makes responses more focused and competent.
Step 2: Add Context and Details
AI does not have a human understanding of the world. Provide all necessary background information. The more details, the better. For example, "I'm writing an article about... for an audience that...". Provide key facts, background, or any other data that will help the model understand the depth of the problem. Good context prevents generic responses and guides the AI to the specifics of your query.
Step 3: Set Restrictions and Format
Explicitly state what the response should or should not include. These might be limits on length (“200 words or less”), style (“formal, jargon-free”), tone (“positive and motivating”), or structure (“5-point list”). Also determine the desired output format: bulleted list, table, paragraph. Clear boundaries help AI stay within your expectations.
Step 4: Use Examples and Test
If possible, show the AI an example of the desired response. This is especially effective for complex or stylistically specific tasks. For example, “Here is an example of text that I like...”. After writing a prompt, always test it. If the result is not satisfactory, analyze which element of the prompt was not clear enough and improve it. Learning by example and iteration are the keys to mastery.
