How AI does it: a map of meanings
AI doesn’t store words like letters—it turns each word into a point in a space of meaning with hundreds of dimensions. Words that appear in similar contexts in texts appear nearby: “volcano,” “lava,” “eruption,” and “mountain” are close because they have appeared in the same sentences millions of times.
When you write “a mountain that spits fire,” the AI adds up the dots of these words and gets a range of meanings where the closest familiar dot is “volcano.” He doesn't look for dictionary definitions, he looks for proximity in this space. Therefore, he understands hints, synonyms and descriptions, even if you never say the word.
The same mechanism works when you give it a work task: the more accurately your words define the desired area of meaning, the closer the AI gets to what you had in mind.
